Economic Development Commission
The Ansonia Economic Development Commission (AEDC) promotes and develops the business and industrial resources of the City. The Commission works to maintain a stable tax base, reduce unemployment, assist existing businesses in expanding, recruit new industry, and administer Community Development Block Grants and other state and federal grants on behalf of the City. It coordinates with the Town Planning & Zoning Commission on commercial and industrial development matters and applies for grants on the City's behalf.
The Commission consists of nine members serving five-year staggered terms, appointed by the Mayor with approval of the Board of Aldermen. All members serve without compensation. No expense may be incurred by the Commission unless an appropriation has been approved by both the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Apportionment & Taxation.

About the Commission
The AEDC conducts research into local economic conditions and trends, makes recommendations to City officials and agencies to improve Ansonia's economic outlook, and seeks to coordinate with private and civic organizations engaged in similar development efforts. The Commission submits an annual report on its activities and recommendations to the Board of Aldermen.
The Commission also serves as the City's designated municipal contact for state and local agencies involved in economic and community development, and is a member of Team Connecticut, a state program connecting local entities with statewide development initiatives. Funding comes through municipal appropriations, local and state service contracts, and grants.

History
The AEDC was established by City ordinance in 1978 in response to economic decline and high unemployment affecting Ansonia and the broader region. Its original mission focused on stimulating job creation and investment in the City. In 1996 the Commission was reorganized and expanded to incorporate the residual functions of the former Ansonia Redevelopment Agency, broadening its scope to include region-wide issues such as education, job retention, transportation, and infrastructure. Today the Commission continues to implement programs to encourage local business expansions, support new business starts, attract compatible new industries, and foster a diversified business climate in Ansonia.
