Historical Commission

The Ansonia Historical Commission gathers, preserves, and protects items of historical importance to the City and surrounding area — including books, magazines, newspapers, photographs, portraits, and other documents of historical significance. The Commission catalogs City-owned historical items, determines where they are displayed and stored, and ensures no item is moved or removed without its express permission and supervision. The Commission also commemorates the accomplishments of Ansonia's citizens, past and present.

The Commission consists of five resident electors serving two-year terms, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Board of Aldermen. It elects its own Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secretary annually from among its members.

About the Commission

The Commission's jurisdiction covers historical items owned by the City. It does not have authority over records and maps held by the Town and City Clerk, Comptroller, Tax Collector, Assessor, Building Department, or Planning and Zoning Commission.

In addition to its preservation role, the Commission plans and organizes efforts to recognize and commemorate the contributions of Ansonia residents throughout the City's history. It works in coordination with Ansonia's Historic District, established under Chapter 12A of the City Code.
