Historic District Commission

The Historic District Commission oversees the preservation and protection of buildings, places, and structures within Ansonia's designated Historic District. Its primary function is to review applications for exterior modifications to properties within the district and issue Certificates of Appropriateness before any work affecting the street-facing appearance of a structure may begin. All hearings and decision meetings are open to the public.

The Commission consists of five regular members and five alternate members serving five-year terms, appointed by the Mayor. It holds all powers and duties established in Connecticut General Statutes ยงยง 7-147a through 7-147k. The Commission elects its own Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary annually.

Meetings

Schedule: As needed

Location:
Ansonia Public Library
53 South Cliff Street
Ansonia, CT 06401

Upon receipt of a Certificate of Appropriateness application, the Commission sets a public hearing within 14 days. Notice is published in a local newspaper at least 7 days before the hearing. The Commission must act within 60 days of receiving the application; failure to act within that period constitutes automatic approval.

Certificate of Appropriateness

Property owners within the Historic District must file an application with the Commission and receive a Certificate of Appropriateness before beginning any work that would change the appearance of a structure as viewed from the street. This applies to all exterior modifications.

The Commission will not deny an application solely on grounds of incongruity with the historic character of the area if the proposed modification is congruous with the exterior features of the existing structure itself.

The Historic District Commission's authority applies to exterior appearance only and does not impair the land-use powers of the Ansonia Planning Commission, Zoning Commission, or Zoning Board of Appeals.

Commission Members

Regular members serve 5-year terms, appointed by the Mayor. The Commission elects its own Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary annually. Alternate members serve in place of absent or conflicted regular members as designated by the Chair.
