How Curbside Pickup Works
🗑️ Trash: every week
Household garbage is picked up once a week on your street’s pickup day (Monday through Thursday).
♻️ Recycling: every other week
Recycling is picked up on your same day, every other week. The city is split into Week A and Week B.
⏰ Out by 6:00 a.m.
Put your trash and your filled blue bin at the curb by 6:00 a.m., rain or shine. Trash and recycling are collected by separate trucks.
2026 Holiday Delays
When a pickup holiday falls Monday–Thursday, pickups on and after the holiday are one day late for the rest of that week.
Example: if the holiday is Monday, Monday’s route is picked up Tuesday, Tuesday’s route Wednesday, and so on through Thursday’s route on Friday. Pickups earlier in the week are not affected.

Curbside Recycling Rules
✅ Do recycle
Newspapers
Bundle and tie, or place in brown paper bags, on top of or next to your blue bin.
Junk mail, magazines, catalogs, paperback books
Place in brown paper bags next to your blue bin.
Glass food and beverage containers
Clear, green, and amber only. Wash them and remove lids and rings. Paper labels can stay on.
Aluminum and metal cans, food trays
Wash and place in the blue bin. Labels can stay on. Crushing cans saves space.
Plastic bottles and containers
Any plastic bottle with a recycling number on the bottom, plus butter, margarine and yogurt containers and empty juice, soda, water, milk and laundry detergent bottles. Remove tops, rinse, and flatten.
Corrugated cardboard
Clean (no wood attached), flattened, bundled, and no larger than 3 square feet. Bring larger cardboard to the Public Works Complex.
🚫 Do not recycle
Hardcover books and other paper
No hardcover books or paper products not listed here. Do not mix other paper with newspapers.
Non-container glass
No light bulbs, plate glass, auto glass, tempered glass, mirrors, ceramics, or broken glass.
Scrap metal, paint cans, automotive cans
No scrap metal, paint cans, or automotive product cans. Empty aerosol cans are OK.

Oversized cardboard at the curb
Cardboard larger than 3 square feet will not be picked up. Drop it off at the Public Works Complex.
⚠️ Avoid a missed pickup
• If your blue bin contains items that can’t be recycled, the bin will not be picked up, and you will be notified of the violation.
• If 20% or more of your garbage is recyclable material, your garbage will not be picked up. A note will be left on your container.
• State of Connecticut recycling regulations require recyclables to be separated from regular garbage. Violations of the City of Ansonia Recycling Ordinance can carry a fine of up to $100.
Why recycle?
Our community, like thousands of others across America, is running out of landfill space. A typical family produces about 60 pounds of recoverable newspaper, cardboard, glass, plastic, tin, and aluminum every month. Recycling reduces what gets buried, turns old paper and plastic into new products, saves energy, and helps conserve oil, coal, and natural gas. Everyone should recycle, and every can or bottle makes a difference.
♻️ Recycling drop-off
You can also drop off recyclables at the Public Works Complex, 1 North Division Street: newspapers, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, metal and aluminum food cans, plastics, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, and paperback books. Leaves and yard waste are accepted too.

Bulky items such as washing machines, refrigerators, and stoves can be picked up at the curb by appointment, or you can drop them off at the transfer station yourself. Leaf pickup is also scheduled through this number.

Free Electronics Recycling
Ansonia residents can bring unwanted electronics to the transfer station free of charge during regular hours. Proof of residency is required. Electronics are packaged by Take 2 Inc. and transported to their facility for responsible, secure recycling.
Accepted (including but not limited to)
Computers, laptops, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, monitors, TVs, cell phones and telephones, tablets and e-readers, cameras, iPods/PDAs, video games and game consoles, VCR/DVD players, remotes, keyboards, computer mice, modems, stereo equipment, microwaves, and other small appliances.
Not accepted
Smoke detectors, ballasts, propane tanks, paint, lighter fluid, liquids, household hazardous waste, and appliances containing Freon (air conditioners, refrigerators, dehumidifiers).
Other option: Take 2 Inc., Waterbury
Take 2 is a Waterbury-based electronics recycler approved by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as a Covered Electronics Recycler under Connecticut’s Electronics Recycling Law (RCSA 22a-638-1). Residents can also drop off electronics free at their facility, where staff will unload your vehicle for you.

Common Questions
What time should I put my trash and recycling out?
The night before your pickup day, rain or shine. On recycling weeks, put your blue bin out alongside your trash.
How do I know if this is my recycling week?
Look up your street at the top of this page. It will tell you your letter (A or B) and whether this week is your recycling week. You can also check the A/B calendar.
A holiday is coming up. When is my pickup?
If the holiday falls Monday–Thursday, pickups on and after the holiday are one day late for the rest of that week. See the holiday table for which holidays cause a delay. When you look up your street, delays are already built into your next pickup dates.
My blue bin wasn’t emptied. Why?
If a bin contains items that can’t be recycled, it will not be picked up. Check the recycling rules, remove the item, and put the bin out on your next recycling day. If you think it was missed by mistake, call (203) 736-5945.
My garbage wasn’t picked up. Why?
If 20% or more of your garbage is recyclable material, it will not be picked up, and a note will be left on your container. Separate the recyclables and put the garbage out on your next pickup day. Otherwise, call Public Works at (203) 736-5945.
How do I get rid of a big box or a lot of cardboard?
Flatten and bundle cardboard into pieces no larger than 3 square feet for curbside recycling. Larger cardboard can be dropped off free at the Public Works Complex.
How do I get rid of a couch, fridge, or mattress?
Couches and stuffed chairs are $10 each at the transfer station. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and air conditioners are free. Mattresses go in the mattress recycling container; call first to make sure there’s room. Between March 1 and May 31 you can also schedule one curbside bulk pickup for $50.
What do I do with leaves and grass clippings?
Leaves, grass clippings, and yard waste can be dropped off free at the transfer station. To schedule leaf pickup, call (203) 736-5945.
Can my contractor use the transfer station?
Only if they are working for an Ansonia resident. The transfer station is for residents only.
