About the Commission

The Charter Revision Commission is appointed by the Board of Aldermen by a two-thirds vote, or upon petition by at least ten percent of the City's registered electors. The Commission must hold at least two public hearings โ€” one before substantive drafting begins and one after a draft report is completed.

The Commission submits its draft report to the Board of Aldermen, which reviews it and may recommend changes. The Commission then issues a final report, and the Board votes on whether to place the proposed amendments on the ballot. If approved by voters, amendments take effect 30 days after the election unless a specific effective date is stated.

The Commission terminates upon the Board of Aldermen's acceptance or rejection of its final report.
